Parrot Emergency Breathing Problems: What Owners Should Do
Breathing changes in a parrot can be frightening, and it is always better to take them seriously. Parrot breathing problems may follow heat, exercise or sudden fright, but they can also be the first visible sign of illness, poisoning or respiratory distress.
Pet birds often hide illness until they are struggling. A calm response, prompt veterinary advice and a safe environment can make a real difference while help is arranged.
Parrot breathing problems: when it becomes an emergency
A healthy parrot should breathe quietly and comfortably while resting. You should not normally see obvious effort through the chest or tail, or hear each breath across the room.
Open mouth breathing, tail bobbing and unusual sounds
Open mouth breathing when your parrot is resting is an emergency. The same applies to pronounced tail bobbing, where the tail moves clearly up and down with each breath because the bird is working harder to breathe.
Clicking, wheezing, gurgling, repeated coughing, a stretched neck, nasal discharge or a changed voice also need prompt attention. A parrot who is fluffed up, weak, unusually quiet, unable to perch or sitting on the cage floor may be seriously unwell.
Bird breathing warning signs such as visible tail movement and audible breathing should never be watched at home in the hope that they will pass.
A parrot can look settled between breaths while still using far too much effort to get enough air.
Panting after flight, fright or heat
Brief panting can happen after energetic flight, excitement, fear or a warm room. Move your bird away from the activity, let them rest somewhere calm and observe without handling them.
The breathing and respiratory rate should settle once your parrot has cooled down and relaxed. If panting continues, returns while they are resting, or comes with tail bobbing or weakness, contact an avian veterinarian straight away. Stress may trigger fast breathing in a healthy bird, but it should not cause persistent breathing difficulty.

What to do while arranging veterinary help
Respiratory distress needs veterinary treatment, not a home remedy. Supportive care only reduces stress while a vet assesses and treats the cause.
Keep your parrot quiet, warm and safely contained
Place your parrot in a secure carrier or small travel cage with a familiar towel on the base. Keep the room comfortably warm, away from direct heat, draughts and noise. Dim light can help reduce panic, but do not block fresh airflow.
Handle your bird as little as possible. Chasing, catching repeatedly or trying to inspect inside the beak can increase the effort of breathing. Do not force food, water, oils or medicines into a parrot that is struggling for air.
Call an avian veterinarian or emergency clinic ahead and say clearly that your parrot has breathing difficulty. An emergency clinic may not have a bird specialist on site, but it may be able to stabilise your bird or direct you to an appropriate service. If fumes or chemicals may be involved
Turn off the source only if it is safe to do so. If environmental toxins, fumes or chemicals may be involved, move your parrot to clean, well-ventilated indoor air. Keep the bird away from the kitchen, smoke, sprays or heated appliances. Avoid taking a distressed bird outdoors into cold, damp or windy conditions.
Keep the packaging, appliance details or a clear photograph of the suspected source for the vet. A pan, cleaning product or air freshener may seem unimportant in the moment, but it can help the clinic assess the risk.

Medical causes of respiratory disease in birds
Many conditions can cause similar respiratory symptoms. Home observation helps you describe what is happening, but it cannot identify the cause.
Infections, aspergillosis and parasites
Respiratory illness may involve a bacterial infection, viral or parasitic illness, or a fungal infection. Chlamydia psittaci causes psittacosis, which can include respiratory signs and spread to people, so follow the vet’s hygiene advice if it is suspected.
Aspergillosis is caused by Aspergillus spores. Damp conditions, mouldy material, stale food and dusty environments can increase exposure, but they don’t establish aspergillosis. It may cause gradual changes such as a quieter voice, reduced activity, weight loss or difficult breathing, but only veterinary testing can confirm it.
Air sac mites and other parasites may also affect breathing. Testing is needed to confirm air sac mites before treatment, as the wrong medication can delay the care your parrot needs.
Vitamin A deficiency and long-term vulnerability
A seed diet can be low in nutrients that support healthy skin and respiratory tissues. Over time, vitamin A deficiency may affect the lining of the mouth, nostrils and respiratory tract, making a secondary respiratory infection more likely.
This does not mean every parrot with a respiratory infection has a dietary deficiency. Your avian veterinarian will consider diet history, weight, clinical signs, physical examination findings and any tests needed. Dietary changes can support recovery, but they don’t replace treatment for an active infection.

Check your home for hidden respiratory hazards
A parrot’s avian respiratory system, including its air sacs, is highly efficient, making airborne environmental toxins especially dangerous. A product that feels mild to people may not be safe for a bird.
Non stick cookware containing PTFE, often called Teflon, can release toxic teflon fumes when overheated. Frying pans aren’t the only concern. Check air fryers, sandwich makers, waffle irons, slow cookers and other heated appliances. Never leave a parrot in the home during an oven self-cleaning cycle.

A practical safety check should include the following:
- Keep cages well away from kitchens, open-plan cooking areas, bathrooms, garages and utility rooms.
- Remove candles, incense, wax melts, plug-ins, essential-oil diffusers and aerosol air fresheners from your parrot’s space.
- Do not clean with bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, disinfectant sprays or strongly scented products near your bird.
- Never mix cleaning products, particularly bleach and ammonia, as dangerous gases can form.
- Use warm water, clean cloths and mild fragrance-free soap for ordinary cleaning, then rinse surfaces well and allow them to dry.
- Check for damp patches, mould, smoke drift, decorating fumes and poor ventilation around the cage.
Keep your bird in another safe room while you clean or cook. Open windows and wait until the room is dry and free from fumes before they return. If major decorating, damp repairs or building work cannot be made safe, temporary care away from the property may be kinder.
What to monitor before the veterinary visit
You do not need to solve the diagnosis before leaving. A few clear observations can help the vet act quickly, but observation must never delay travel or emergency contact.
Record what you can see and hear
Note when the respiratory symptoms began and what may have preceded them, including flight, stress, a new product, smoke, cooking or illness in another bird. If it does not upset your parrot, take a short video from a distance showing the breathing and tail movement. An avian veterinarian may assess respiratory rate from the recording.
Observe whether your bird is eating, drinking, perching and responding normally. Check for nasal discharge or discharge around the eyes, a wet or stained area around the beak, droppings changes and a shift in voice. Do not restrain your parrot to collect this information.
Tell the clinic about the whole picture
Mention recent diet changes, exposure to new birds, dampness, household repairs, new cookware, sprays and any medication. If your parrot has vomited, has a swollen crop or has produced very few droppings, say so when you call.
